European Cycle Events are an Official Maratona dles Dolomites – Enel tour operator
The first Maratona dles Dolomites Enel was on 12th July 1987. This was a celebration of the first 10 years of the cycling club Societá Ciclistica Alta Badia-Raiffeisen. The 175 kms route snaked through seven Dolomite passes: Gardena, Sella, Fedaia, Duran, Forcella Staulanza, Falzarego and Valparola. It started and ended in Pedraces. There were 166 participants. The first to pass the finish line was the Austrian Wolfgang Steinmayr, a former Austrian Olympic cyclist aged 43, who rode for over ten hours. There was also a single woman riding; Trui Beemsterboern from Holland, who finished just one hour later. The organising committee of the time never imagined that it was the start of an event that would become part of non-professional cycling contest history worldwide.
To bring this up to date, the penultimate climb, the mighty 9.9 kms Passo Giau, will give you plenty to think about with 922 meters of pure climbing at an average gradient of 9.3% and a maximum of 15%. It’s also a very different story now from those early days, with 30,000 entries and just 12,000 + cyclists being allotted places to ride.
Thursday 29th July 2023 to Monday 3rd July 2023.
