Mont Ventoux is arguably one of the most famous cycle climbs in Europe. At 1,912 meters Ventoux, the ‘Giant of Provence’ dominates the beautiful Provence countryside and can be seen from 100 kms away. 2,500 rides will climb 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) in just 140 kms (87 miles) on the long route. The shorter route delivers a challenging 115 kms (71 miles) with 3,000 meters ascent (9,800 feet).
The Italian poet Petrarch wrote about his ascent of Mont Ventoux in 1336 describing the parallels between the struggle of the climb and the challenges of life. How could he have known that 631 years later Tommy Simpson, one of Britain’s most successful riders of all-time would face the ultimate challenge and collapse and die during the 13th stage of the 1967 Tour de France ascent of Mont Ventoux. You will pass the monument to Tommy Simpson on your way to the summit.
The Tour first climbed Mont Ventoux in 1951 and whilst 2017 only saw the Tour’s 16th visit, Ventoux has always been legendary. Eddy Merckx needed oxygen in 1970 and the mountain effectively ended the career of Swiss climber Ferdi Kübler in 1955. You will climb out of the forest on the lower slopes into the bare white moonscape that makes Ventoux so unique. Ventoux will not only add to your cycling career but also the memory will be legendary.
