The End to End, which way and why are the key questions I am often asked. Why is because it’s an iconic distance for a cyclist and I have always had it in my mind to do, which way, from John O’Groats to Land’s End as it’s harder that way due to the prevailing wind so they say. In addition I fancy getting the Scottish Highlands done and dusted whist I have more energy, that’s my theory.
The journey is not just for personal satisfaction but I am rasing money for Bike4cancer.org. If you donate £5 you will go into a draw for a FULLY INCLUSIVE 4 day trip to the Maratona (2020) plus 5% of the cost if a friend joins you, thanks to Europeancycleevents.com.
My journey will commence on 12/8/2019 after my return from Bormio Italy where I will climb the Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo which is the final part of my training plan plus I am hoping by riding in August I get better weather.
What will I need and be carrying on a daily basis, well this is an interesting list but remember each person’s requirements are different.
DURING THE RIDE/OVERNIGHT ITEMS, tubes, tyre leavers, pump, rain cape, arm warmers, leg warmers, shoe covers, gloves, phone, phone battery pack, headphones, possible spare tyre, credit/debit card, energy products and cash, USB Plug, relevant cables, toothpaste, hair brush, hair wax, body spray, body wash.
I will be sending kit, energy products and evening clothes in advance via Parcelforce so I have clean kit every day.
I am spoilt for choice when it comes to bikes, Kuota (2), Pinarello (4), Cipollini (1). I have opted to ride my trusty stead that being my steel Pinarello Treviso. The frame geometry is ideal for such a journey.
It’s equipped with 10 Speed Campagnolo Record, Deda Bars and Stem, Spinnergy Wheels, Fizik saddle, Lezyne Computer and full length mudguards (just in case, you never know in Scotland).
The gearing ratio is a compact chainset (50/34) and a cassette range of 12/29 this combination has served we well on the long climbs in Italy for many years so fingers crossed back home.
Whilst riding I will be targeting to break every 40km (25 miles), thanks to Steve owner of VeloSport (Putney) they are supplying me with NamedSport Italy’s leading sports nutrition product which is supplied to four Gran Tours Team.
A daily report will be posted on Facebook at www.facebook.com/europeancycleevents
